Our soloists March 2022

We are delighted to welcome our soloists to New Hall, Winchester College to perform with Winchester Music Club.

Hilary Cronin – Soprano

Winner of both First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2021 London Handel International Singing Competition, Hilary Cronin studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and was a Robinson Hearn, Trinity College London, and Dame Susan Morden Scholar. 

Prior to this, Hilary read Music and was a choral scholar at Royal Holloway University of London, where she was awarded The Driver Prize and the Dame Felicity Lott Bursary. She also studied on British Youth Opera’s 2020/2021 Serena Fenwick Programme. Operatic engagements have included Grilletta Lo Speziale for Baroquestock Opera, Mother Hansel and Gretel for Silent Opera and British Youth Opera at Opera Holland Park, Second Woman Dido and Aeneas for the New Generation Festival, Céphise Pygmalion for Dunedin Consort and Mrs Waters The Boatswain’s Mate for Spectra Ensemble at Grimeborn Festival.

 In 2016, Hilary covered the roles of Minerva Ulysses’ Homecoming and Diana La Calisto for English Touring Opera and in 2019 Hilary covered Despina Così fan tutte for Nevill Holt Opera. 

Hilary’s concert repertoire includes the major oratorios of J. S. Bach, Handel, Haydn and Mozart, as well as the Requiems of Brahms, Chilcott, Fauré and Rutter and the Stabat Maters of Pergolesi, Poulenc and Scarlatti. Hilary has worked with several leading ensembles including Arcangelo, The Monteverdi Choir, Dunedin Consort, London Voices, BBC Singers, English Voices and Sansara. 

Hilary Cronin’s upcoming engagements include Bach St Matthew Passion with Gavin Carr and the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus at The Lighthouse – Poole, Bach St John Passion with the English Chamber Orchestra and VOCES8 at Cadogan Hall and Handel Dixit Dominus and Haydn Nelson Mass with Goring Chamber Choir at Douai Abbey.

Anita Monserrat – Mezzo Soprano

Anita Monserrat began singing as a chorister in Salisbury Cathedral and went on to continue her vocal studies with Rachel Sherry at the junior department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She graduated with a degree in Music from Trinity College, Cambridge, where she held both choral and instrumental scholarships. 

As a member of Trinity College Choir, she performed both Bach’s B Minor Mass and Christmas Oratorio at St. John Smith’s Square with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, recorded frequently and undertook several international tours. Anita appeared as a soloist on multiple CDs of choral works, including those by Cecilia McDowall (released 2021 on Hyperion) and Owain Park (released 2018 on Hyperion). 

Since 2019, Anita has held positions in the choirs Polyphony, directed by Stephen Layton, and Tenebrae, directed by Nigel Short. Recent performances include the 2019 BBC Proms, Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles in Santiago de Compostela, touring to Australia in January and the Easter Day 2020 ‘Culture in Quarantine’ broadcast, as seen on BBC4. 

Whilst spending a fourth year in Cambridge studying for an MPhil, Anita was involved in a lot of student operas, singing the roles of Sesto in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Semele in Handel’s Semele and Tisbe in Rossini’s La Cenerentola. She also appeared as the soloist in the 2020 ‘Easter from King’s’ broadcast, as seen on BBC2. 

She is now in her second year at the Royal Academy of Music as a mezzo-soprano under the tutelage of Alexander Ashworth and Catherine Wyn-Rogers. As part of her studies at the Academy, Anita performed as a soloist in Handel’s Dixit Dominus, directed by Iain Ledingham, and has played the roles of Sesto (Giulio Cesare) and Cenerentola (La Cenerentola) in the Academy Opera Scenes. 

Recent engagements include the semifinals of the 2021 Hurn Court Opera Singer of the Year Competition, soloist in Bach’s St John Passion, directed by Philippe Herreweghe, and soloist in Haydn’s Nelson Mass with South Bucks Choral Society, directed by Iain Ledingham and soloist in the 2022 ‘Easter from King’s’ broadcast.

Jeremy Budd – Tenor

Born in Hertfordshire, Jeremy started out as a Chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral in London before going on to study at the Royal Academy of Music. Since finishing his studies he has been much in demand as a soloist on the concert platform, particularly noted for his work in the baroque, though his repertoire stretches to modern day commissions. 

Jeremy has worked with many of the foremost conductors in the early music field including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Harry Christophers, Masaaki Suzuki, Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Charles Mackerras, Paul McCreesh, John Butt, Bernard Labadie and Jonathan Cohen. Notable performances have included a tour of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with The Sixteen, a tour of the USA with Tenebrae performing Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles, and abridged version of the Bach’s St Matthew Passion with Streetwise Opera (screened on BBC4), Purcell’s King Arthur and Fairy Queen with the Gabrieli Consort and Monteverdi’s Madrigals with Arcangelo. 

Recently Jeremy has performed Gibbons Verse Anthems with Fretwork and toured Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. His discography includes works ranging from Handel’s Acis and Galatea to James MacMillan’s Stabat Mater.

Malachy Frame – Bass

Belfast-born baritone Malachy Frame was Northern Ireland Opera’s ‘Voice of 2016,’ having won the competition at the company’s annual Festival of Voice in August. Since then, operatic roles have included Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Slook in Rossini’s La Cambiale di Matrimonio, Leporello and Masetto in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Count Ceprano in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Labarta in the UK premiere of Juan Durán’s O Arame for XOGA, and Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.

Malachy was a Garsington Opera Alvarez Young Artist in 2018. He was a finalist in the Oxford Lieder Young Artist Platform 2018, a finalist in the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards 2016 at the Wigmore Hall, and won the Song Prize at the inaugural Charles Wood Singing Competition in 2019.

As a concert soloist, recent performances have included Britten’s War Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Magnificat, St John Passion, and St Matthew Passion, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Alexander’s Feast, Vaughan-Williams’ Five Mystical Songs.

Malachy has performed throughout the country with ensembles such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Allegri String Quartet, and the Dunedin Consort.

Malachy completed a Masters at the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying with Mark Wildman and Iain Ledingham and graduating with distinction and a DipRAM for an outstanding final recital. Prior to this he graduated from the University of Cambridge, where he read Music and was a choral scholar at Gonville and Caius College.
